The number of martyred journalists has risen to 166 since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza on October 7.
Palestinian and international institutions had previously warned of the Israeli army targeting press crews in the Gaza Strip, but the occupation army continued to target them despite them wearing press vests and helmets, defying international warnings.
For her part, Irene Khan, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression, said that the conflict in Gaza is the most deadly and dangerous for journalists. Khan added, “There is killing, impunity and the absence of any kind of justice.”
The Special Rapporteur said, “I spoke with some journalists who told me that when they wear their vests with the word press printed on them, they feel more in danger than when they do not wear them.”
The International Center for Journalists, a Washington-based non-governmental organization, announced in February that the war on Gaza witnessed the highest levels of violence against journalists in 30 years, and called on Israel to stop killing journalists and investigate incidents of their killing by its forces.
